On International Beer Day, Friday, 7 August 2026, at 6.00 pm, visitors are invited to a special guided tour of the temporary exhibition “It’s Beer!” at the Göcseji Museum.

Please note that the guided tour and the exhibition texts are available in Hungarian only.

A guided tour with Ferenc Tar

The tour will be led by historian and museologist Ferenc Tar, who has spent decades researching the history of Keszthely and the Lake Balaton region. His main fields of interest include the history of the Festetics and Reischl families and the local history of Keszthely and Hévíz.

Thousands of years of beer history

When did people first begin brewing beer? What do we know about the earliest fermented drinks made from grain? What role did beer play in ancient Egypt, how was it regulated by the Code of Hammurabi, and when did brewing begin in medieval Hungary?

The guided tour will explore these questions while tracing how the production and consumption of beer changed over the centuries.

The golden age of brewing in Zala

The tour will place particular emphasis on the history of brewing in Zala. The second half of the 19th century marked a golden age for beer production in the region.

Visitors can learn about important chapters in the brewing history of Keszthely and Nagykanizsa, as well as the brewers and families who became influential figures not only through their businesses but also in the economic, social and political life of their towns.

Discover how the thousands of years of beer history are connected to Zala’s rich local and economic heritage.
