The exhibition “Cardinal József Mindszenty’s Life Journey” has as its primary aim and message the presentation of József Mindszenty, one of the most defining and iconic figures of 20th-century Hungarian history and ecclesiastical history, whose sacrifice has been interpreted in highly diverse ways depending on the political context of recent decades.

With this exhibition, we aim to refine the more one-dimensional and abstractly categorized pre- and post-regime-change “Mindszenty canon”; beyond highlighting the historical role of the prelate, we also focus on presenting the HUMAN being. Mindszenty is not only a figure of the past century – he can also speak to younger generations.

“I Have Brought Love Here as Well” – József Mindszenty

The life and legacy of József Mindszenty are presented to visitors using state-of-the-art, unique installation techniques and technological solutions. The exhibition is less object-centred and more experience-driven; its goal is, beyond providing meaningful information, to encourage visitors to pursue further independent research and reading, regardless of age or educational background.

As the exhibition addresses multiple generations with differing levels of knowledge and expectations, its multimedia content is also adapted accordingly: it includes both a more youthful, dynamic body of knowledge and deeper, more comprehensive informational units that may also raise open questions.

Mindszenty’s 1956 Speech

After Mindszenty was released by the revolutionaries of the 1956 Revolution following 8 years of imprisonment, he delivered a radio speech. You can also listen to this original audio recording in the exhibition.

Structure of the Exhibition

In the Mindszentyneum, an entire floor is dedicated to the exhibition presenting the life journey of its namesake, Mindszenty, within which five distinct sections are identified.

The section titled “The Vocation of a Life” offers insight into the archbishop’s childhood, studies, and early years in the priesthood, followed by his 25 years of service in Zalaegerszeg, where visitors can learn about his most significant social, architectural, and cultural contributions. It also shows how deeply he was connected to his birthplace, even changing his name in its honour.

In the next space, visitors can explore the intense life period from the end of World War II (starting in 1944) up to his arrest in 1948, a time marked by highly extreme experiences. During this period, he received major ecclesiastical recognition, but was also briefly imprisoned by the Arrow Cross, and his three-year tenure as archbishop ultimately ended with arrest.

The third section focuses on the years of his 8-year imprisonment, presenting detailed information from the circumstances of his arrest to his release.

Moving further, visitors encounter his final life period. During the 1956 Revolution he was released from prison, but a few days later he had to flee again. He was granted refuge at the U.S. Embassy in Budapest, where he lived in a new form of confinement for 15 years, albeit under relatively comfortable conditions. Eventually, he emigrated and spent the final three years of his life as a travelling pastor until his death.
