Zsigmond Kisfaludi Strobl
Zsigmond Kisfaludi Strobl, a sculptor, two-time recipient of the Kossuth Prize, and honorary citizen of Zalaegerszeg, was born in 1884 in Alsórajk, Zala County. His former birthplace – where he lived with his parents until the age of three – now houses a permanent exhibition of his exceptional works, open to visitors on designated days throughout the year.
Starting out from a small village in Zala County, Kisfaludi Strobl achieved remarkable international success. After studying in Budapest, Vienna, and Paris, he went on to receive prestigious commissions and an academic position, gaining recognition from Hungary’s highest honours, the London elite, and later the Moscow artistic circles. His art reflects an extraordinary life journey: while disregarding passing trends, he consistently remained committed to the ideals of classical beauty and achieved worldwide acclaim. More than half a century after his death, Kisfaludi Strobl’s works continue to adorn public spaces; the Statue of Liberty has become a symbol of the Hungarian capital, his small sculptures remain sought-after pieces on the art market, and his portrait sculptures form a remarkable gallery of prominent figures from the past century.
Permanent Exhibition in Alsórajk
The exhibition in Alsórajk is not without precedent. In 2008, the staff of the Göcseji Museum had already created a permanent exhibition in the artist’s birthplace. Ten years later, however, it was dismantled due to a comprehensive renovation of the building. The pandemic situation caused further delays, but the time has now come to recreate the exhibition.
The collection presents 20 works by the sculptor: 18 sculptures and 2 paintings. The selection was arranged by Dr László Kostyál, art historian and curator, so that each period of Kisfaludi Strobl’s artistic career is represented by a characteristic work. The experience is further enhanced by 17 large-format photographs, which support both understanding and visual appreciation.
The internationally renowned sculptor Zsigmond Kisfaludi Strobl left behind a remarkable artistic legacy during his long life. His portrait sculptures are particularly outstanding, but his work in other fields of sculpture – including monumental outdoor works, nudes, reliefs, small sculptures, and medals – also demonstrates great diversity of form and exceptional mastery of materials.
