The history of the city of Zalaegerszeg has never been presented in such a comprehensive and informative exhibition. Designed with the expectations of today’s audiences in mind, the exhibition bears the title The Life of Our Ancestors.

The exhibition presents, in chronological order, the centuries-spanning story of the former and present-day citizens of Zalaegerszeg, with particular emphasis on their way of life, everyday activities, clothing, work, and forms of entertainment throughout history.

Mihály Egerszegi and Boriska

Throughout the exhibition, a couple from Zalaegerszeg – Mihály Egerszegi and Boriska – come to life and guide visitors from one historical era to the next. In the medieval market town, they appear as farmers; during the Ottoman period, Mihály serves as a border fortress soldier. In the 18th century, visitors gain insight into the life of a guild craftsman, while in the 19th-century Reform Era he is portrayed as an urban nobleman. During the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy, Mihály becomes an urban intellectual, and in the 20th-century Horthy era he works as a civil servant. In the Kádár period, the couple live as factory workers who have moved from a nearby village to the city.

Spectacular, Engaging, Interactive

Covering nearly 500 square metres across five interconnected exhibition halls, the permanent exhibition presents the history of the city while also highlighting key moments from the history of Zala County. A rich collection of artefacts is complemented by large-scale decorations, reconstructed interiors, and digital content – including humorous animations, films, audio recordings, and interactive games – that help bring the past to life.

Visit us and step into the world of Zalaegerszeg’s past, guided by the charming companionship of Mihály and Boriska!
